Epilepsy, fainting
Epilepsy and syncope (fainting) are neurological conditions that can cause a loss of consciousness, but they have different causes and treatment options.
Epilepsy is a condition that causes recurring seizures, which can range from temporary muscle twitching or sensory disturbances to loss of consciousness. Syncope, on the other hand, refers to brief fainting spells triggered by a drop in blood pressure or an interruption of the blood supply to the brain.
Epilepsy can have hereditary causes or be triggered by brain injuries, infections or other factors. Diagnosis requires specialised tests such as a recording of the brain’s electrical activity (EEG) to detect typical changes in electrical brain activity. Syncope, by contrast, can be caused by various triggers such as fluid deficiency or heart problems.
The treatment of epilepsy often includes medication to control seizures, as well as lifestyle changes. For syncope, therapy depends on the underlying cause, but can also include lifestyle changes and medication.
