Nerve/muscle
disorders
Disorders of the peripheral nerves and muscle disorders affect the nervous system outside the brain and the spinal cord. Symptoms such as numbness, tingling, weakness, pain or muscle wasting in the arms and legs often occur. The causes are varied and can be genetic or due to injuries, infections or autoimmune diseases.
The diagnosis of such disorders requires a careful neurological examination, electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies, as well as, in some cases, a neuromuscular ultrasound examination. An accurate diagnosis is the key to developing a suitable treatment plan.
The treatment of peripheral neurological disorders can take many forms.
It often includes physiotherapy, medications for pain relief and reducing inflammation, as well as the treatment of underlying conditions. In some cases – for example, carpal tunnel syndrome – surgical procedures may be necessary to correct nerve compression or other problems.
At Berner Neurologie, we are highly specialised in the diagnosis and treatment of peripheral neurological disorders. We work closely with our patients to develop individual treatment plans and improve their quality of life.
